2026/9/10 - Vertical MF Spot Welder for M6 Waterproof Stud Welding
On September 10, 2026, PDKJ carried out an on-site welding application for a hardware manufacturing industry customer using a Vertical MF Spot Welder. The application focused on resistance welding M6 waterproof studs onto steel workpieces on the customer’s own workshop floor, where seal integrity at the stud base and protection of the M6 threads are important for reliable production.

Customer Welding Requirements
Waterproof studs are used wherever a fastening point must not leak: housings, covers, valve and sensor fittings and similar components. The stud carries a sealing feature at its base, and the welding process must fuse that base completely around its circumference so the joint stays watertight in service. For an M6 size this happens on a very small contact area, which concentrates both the current and the heat.
That small contact area is also why the process is demanding. If the heat input runs too high or lasts too long, the threads above the weld zone heat up and deform, and the mating fastener no longer runs on. If the heat is too low, the sealing feature does not fuse fully and the joint passes a visual check but leaks under pressure. The process window between these two failure modes is narrow.
The customer wanted exactly this window proven on their own parts, so PDKJ brought a vertical medium frequency spot welder to the workshop and ran the M6 waterproof stud application on site, tuning the schedule on the customer’s components with the customer’s operators watching every cycle.
The customer needed a welding solution that could provide:
- Complete, watertight fusion around the base of every M6 stud
- M6 threads that stay undamaged and fully usable after welding
- Consistent weld quality from stud to stud in production
- Correct electrode alignment and force for small M6 parts
- Short cycle times suited to volume production
- Simple operation with foot-pedal cycle start
- Parameters proven on the customer’s own components on site
A leaking stud weld is one of the most expensive faults to find late: the part may be machined, coated and assembled before the leak appears in testing, and the rework path runs backwards through every one of those steps. A ruined M6 thread is cheaper to catch, but only if it is caught before assembly, and on volume parts both faults trace back to the same cause, an unstable process with too wide a spread in current and force.
Vertical Medium Frequency Spot Welding Solution for M6 Waterproof Studs
The vertical medium frequency spot welder suits stud work for two reasons. First, the vertical press head brings the electrode straight down onto the stud, so the force acts along the stud axis and the part is held square during the weld, which keeps the fusion ring even around the base. Second, the medium frequency inverter control delivers a short, precisely regulated current pulse, so the heat is generated at the sealing feature and faying surface rather than spreading up into the threads.
On site, the electrode holder and lower fixture were matched to the customer’s parts, and the weld schedule was tuned stud by stud: current and weld time were raised until the fusion ring at the stud base was complete, while force and hold time were set so the stud stayed dimensionally stable and the M6 threads remained clean. Each accepted schedule was stored in the touch-screen controller for recall in production.
In operation, the operator loads the part against the fixture and starts the cycle with the foot pedal. The machine closes, welds and holds under force automatically, so stud quality no longer depends on operator feel.
How the Machine Solves Customer Pain Points
1. Watertight Fusion Around the Stud Base
The sealing feature at the base of a waterproof stud acts like a projection: it concentrates the current, then collapses into a fusion ring as the weld develops. With medium frequency control and axial electrode force, that ring forms completely around the M6 base, which is what gives the joint its seal.
2. Thread Protection During the Weld
The weld pulse is short and localized at the stud base, and the electrode force clamps the part before and after the current flows, so heat does not travel up the stud to the threads. The M6 threads stay sharp and undamaged, and the mating fastener runs on by hand after welding.
3. Consistent Force on Small M6 Parts
Small studs leave no margin for variation: a little too much force collapses the sealing feature, a little too little leaves gaps at the fusion ring. The pneumatic press head applies the same force at the same closing speed on every cycle, which keeps the process inside its narrow window.
4. Repeatable Schedules in the Controller
Current, weld time, force and hold are stored as schedules in the touch-screen controller, so every operator welds the M6 studs with the same proven settings. This repeatability is what turns a successful trial into a production-capable process.
5. Low Spatter Around the Weld Zone
A regulated pulse applied with correct force does not expel material the way an overloaded weld does, so the area around the stud stays clean. Around a waterproof seal this matters doubly, because spatter near the seal zone becomes a leak path.
6. Process Proven on the Customer’s Own Components
The schedule was tuned and verified on the customer’s actual workpieces during the on-site application, so the weld quality demonstrated on September 10 is the quality the production process will reproduce.
Welding Process
The welding process can generally be organized as:
Part Loading Against the Lower Fixture → Stud Placement in the Electrode Holder → Schedule Selection for the M6 Waterproof Stud → Electrode Closing and Force Build-Up → Medium Frequency Weld Pulse and Fusion Ring Formation → Hold Under Force for Cooling → Electrode Release and Part Unloading → Thread and Seal Check → Volume Production
Before production, welding parameters can be adjusted according to the material, workpiece structure, joint geometry, and required joint performance.
Why Choose a Vertical MF Spot Welder?
Stud and nut welding lives or dies on repeatability, because the contact area is small and the process window is narrow. The vertical medium frequency inverter spot welder provides the two things that narrow window needs: axial, repeatable electrode force from a press-type head, and a short, precisely controlled current pulse from the medium frequency inverter.
Compared with processes that rely on operator skill to judge heat, this machine holds the schedule mechanically, so every M6 waterproof stud is welded with the same force, the same pulse and the same hold time, and the fusion ring forms the same way every cycle.
Beyond studs, the same machine class covers projection welding of nuts, bolts and formed features on sheet parts, making it a flexible investment for manufacturers who weld fasteners in volume. PDKJ builds vertical medium frequency welding machines and matching automation for these applications.

Actual welding capability depends on the material, thickness, joint structure, electrode or fixture configuration, and production requirements.
From Customer-Site Testing to Production
The on-site application let the customer watch the M6 waterproof stud welding run on their own parts, cycle after cycle, with each parameter change evaluated on the actual components rather than on samples.
Welded studs were checked for fusion at the base and for thread condition, so both the seal and the fastening function were verified before the schedule was accepted.
The schedule proven on September 10 is stored in the controller, and the customer can carry it directly into production on the same machine class.
Conclusion
The September 10 on-site application demonstrates the use of the Vertical MF Spot Welder for M6 waterproof stud welding, with the schedule tuned and verified on the customer’s own components in their workshop.
